Learn Walls, Properly

A short game with surprising depth: race your pawn to the far side while spending a limited supply of walls to slow your opponent down. Here are the real rules with diagrams, the strategy that actually wins, and honest answers to the questions every new player asks.

Why We Wrote This Guide

Walls looks almost too simple to need a guide. Two pawns, a grid, a handful of walls, and a finish line on the far side. Then you play a few games and discover that every wall you place is permanent, every wall you spend is one you will never get back, and the shortest route to your goal keeps quietly getting longer. The simplicity is the trap. The depth is real.

When we built our Walls AI, we had to teach a machine to weigh two completely different kinds of move against each other: advancing its own pawn, or spending a wall to lengthen the opponent's path. That balance, racing versus blocking, is the entire game, and thinking it through carefully is what produced this guide. It is written for humans, not machines, and it assumes nothing.

Read it the way we would teach a friend. Start with the rules if Walls is new to you. Move to the strategy once the moves feel natural. Check the FAQ whenever a specific question is nagging at you.

Then Put It Into Practice

Reading about Walls is useful. Playing it is how the wall sense actually develops. Our Walls game runs free in your browser, with no download and no account required for casual play.

You can play against a friend on the same screen, challenge someone remotely with a simple game code, or test yourself against our AI at five difficulty levels. The AI taught itself through play, so the lower levels make genuinely human mistakes you can punish, and the higher levels will make you pay for every wasted wall. It is a good sparring partner at every stage of learning.
